Lesson 2: Defining the Genre of Science Fiction

Brainstorm for one minute and write words on the blackboard: what words come to mind when you think of science fiction?

Define the boundaries of Science Fiction:
  1. View a selection of the movie trailers.
  2. Each student should individually, record a list of trends that they see in more than one film ex: aliens, futuristic setting, etc.
  3. when we are done showing clips, each group should share the trends they notice and compile a master list.  Once they have their list, they could add any they think might be missing (Connect to self)
  4. Determining Importance-- In their groups, rank these trends by importance and justify their decisions.
  5. Class discussion:
  6. Connect to Text-- What other genres are represented in Science Fiction movies? Ex. Romance, action?
  7. Questioning/ Synthesis--  What are the 3 (level 4 or off the page) questions consistently being asked in science fiction movies?
  8. Ex. What does it mean to be human?
